Now where have we heard this before.
Well, although its not an AI project according to Markram, he claims the model brains resulting from his 'Blue Brain Project" will be able to learn to do what we human's can learn to do, perform complex decision-making, manifest emotions, intelligence and personalities. Such that "Self-awareness and consciousness may also emerge..." All within 10 years from now. So he is following the fine tradition of those in the AI camp it seems of claiming "just round the corner".
Herbet Simon claimed "within 20 years" in 1965. Minsky claimed "within a generation..." and then some, that was back in 1967, he ending up way off the range.
Others since have claimed, all have underestimated the difficulties and overestimated the capabilties of technology. None have acheived the goal of a sentient machine. Nowhere near ( though some folk seem to think we already have them ) so I am sure you will understand why I take Markram's claims with a pinch of silicon.
If however, when Forbin, err, I mean Markram turns on his blue brain and it promptly threatens to annihilate us all if we don't feed it clean energy, I might be convinced but other than that....10 years, I don't think so.
